Sr. Hinojosa - Religion
Sister Lucia Hinojosa
Sister Lucia has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary education with a specialty in English, and a Masters Degree in Religious education (both English & Spanish), from Incarnate Word College, in San Antonio, TX. She also has a Masters Degree in Early Childhood education, from Texas A&M Universtiy. She has over 40 years teaching experience in grades K-8. She taught 3rd grade for 10 years, early in her career, but once she began teaching Kindergarten she found it was her area of strength. She taught kindergarten for over 20 years. Throughout her career, she has taught Religious education to elementary students.
Sister Lucia has always known that she wanted to be a teacher. She is the 7th of 16 children. She grew up in a very loving home with parents who stressed the importance of education to her and her siblings. Her mom would teach the neighborhood kids to read, and following in her mother’s footsteps, at the age of 10 sister Lucia set up a ‘classroom’ in her parents garage, where she too began teaching kids to read & write. All of her siblings finished school and went on to professional jobs, and four others beside her are teachers.
She so “loved the charisma of the teaching order, ‘Missionary Daughters of the MPV Mary’, and their philosophy to ‘bring love where there is suffering’. She joined the order in 1960, and Sister Lucia celebrated 50 years as a ‘Sister’ in the spring of 2010. In her own words, she describes her years of service as:“wonderful”…I have always felt loved, I have NEVER felt alone, and I am REALLY happy being who I am”.
One of the things that makes her such a great teacher is that she “teaches the whole child: emotionally, spiritually and intellectually, and she emphasizes respect for peers and authority,” in a structured but loving & compassionate manner.
Sister Lucia also teaches Religious Education on Wednesday evenings, to 4th-graders from the public school. She sees first-hand some marked differences between those kids and the kids here at St. Joseph School of the same age. She observes that: “Without the Word of God in their lives on a daily basis, many of those kids are empty…Everything we offer here at our school helps kids…The ‘whole-child’ centered environment, and the discipline taught from Kindergarten through 5th grade at St. Joseph School is consistent. St. Joseph students are well-behaved, respectful and polite, and there is a big difference in their eagerness to learn. Parents who send their children to St. Joseph are really interested in the education of their children. They send them to St. Joseph’s because Catholic education brings out the best in the child—not just for today—but for their lifetime”.
